The IRS is encouraging taxpayers to create an IRS Individual Online Account for added security and convenience. It is a secure way to access your tax information and can help protect against identity theft. The online account will allow you to view adjusted gross income, check refund status, verify estimated tax payments made and request an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). (IR-2026-21)
Most importantly, your IRS Online Account can approve third-party authorizations (Power of Attorney and Tax Information Authorization) entirely online. This eliminates faxing, mailing, or uploading documents.
WHAT YOU CAN DO IN YOUR IRS ONLINE ACCOUNT:
- View key tax details (including adjusted gross income)
- Check refund status and tax payments
- Request an Identity Protection (IP) PIN
- View and download certain tax documents (W-2, 1095-A, and various 1099s)
- Review balances, make payments, and manage payment plans
- Receive and view 200+ IRS digital notices
BEFORE YOU START THE ONLINE APPLICATION:
- A valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport)
- A phone or computer with a camera for identity verification
