Mandated health insurance doesn’t take effect until 2014, but employers already must comply with several key provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

Case in point: A company must provide participants in a group health insurance plan with a summary of benefits and coverage (SBC). In addition, PPACA requires employers to give advance notice of at least 60 days for certain changes in a plan. This includes “material modifications” in plan terms or coverage that are not reflected in the SBC.
